Possibly a dumb question, but… if you get solar panels and batteries, how do you know how much power you need?

Just starting to look into solar panels/batteries for the house. In May, we used 1300 kw and the highest month in recent years was about 1700kw. I guess when you get solar, you still have an electric bill, since you are connected to the grid, and you can sell back surplus energy, and if you happen to run out, you can start using their electricity. So how much power generating capacity should one get, based on one’s usage? The same amount, slightly more than you need, slightly less than you need? Also, please tell me everything else you know about doing this. 🙂
