Thoughts on the Enphase Sunlight Backup?

Advertisements

What do you think about the Enphase Sunlight Backup option available with the IQ8 micro-inverters? It provides the ability to power up to 8 120V (or 4 240V) critical load circuits using solar when the grid is down.

I’m starting my journey to install solar on my house and it seems a bit crazy that when there’s a blackout I can’t use my solar panels without installing a very expensive battery system. Yes, I understand the safety reasons…but if a backup generator can use an automatic transfer switch to disconnect from the grid and power a critical load panel, it seems strange this isn’t a standard option for solar installs…but I’m not a power or utility engineer so there is probably more complexity to it.

So, given the cost and availability of a battery install these days…is it worth getting an Enphase system with the sunlight backup?
