Easy to go grid tied to off grid?

Obviously “easy” is a relative term. A better question might be are there installation choices with a grid-tied system that will make it easier down the line to go off grid? Also, does off grid mean completely off grid or just that your solar doesn’t feed into the grid? Ideally we’d be able to get our grid-tied panels up and running and then later add a battery to charge during the day, use that in the evening and basically have the grid as a backup if we exhaust the battery after daylight. Make sense? Doable?
