EDIT: This is regarding solar and net metering in California.
- Owners of existing solar retain current net metering rates
- Average export rate in California cut from $0.30 per kilowatt to $0.08 per kilowatt, time-of-day applies
- Credits for installing solar + storage
- Allows installation of solar systems covering 150 percent of a customer’s electricity usage to accommodate future electrification of appliances and vehicles.
- Proposed $8/kw monthly fees eliminated
This proposal will be on the CPUC’s Dec. 15, 2022 Voting Meeting agenda.
The California rooftop solar market has grown to a robust 1.3 million homes covered with panels, representing about 50% of the US residential market.
Californians added 13 GW of solar energy to the state, roughly the output of six Diablo Canyon nuclear power plants. In addition, consumers have added nearly 1 gigawatt of energy storage which helped keep the lights on during recent heat waves.
Payments for power fed to the grid will be cut to the “avoided cost” to the utility, a small fraction of the retail rate paid by customers for electricity supplied by the grid. CPUC claimed the new proposed decision will lead to an average payback of nine years for residential rooftop solar, based on an assumption of a $3.30 cost per Watt installed.
