Whisky Review: Fior Blended Scotch Whisky

Scotch Whisky is one of the most sought-after categories in not just whisky but all spirits. It has consistently been in demand for centuries and has continued to be a hot commodity in the USA since at least World War Two. With the ubiquitous availability of scotch, it is no wonder that over the years, owners and producers of this whisky have hailed from places less associated with Scotland itself.

In fact, some of the most sought-after scotch brands are owned by American individuals and companies, including Compass Box, amongst others.

One of the newest scotch brands to be owned by an American is Fior Blended Scotch Whisky. Fior is the creation of Major Eric Dominijanni (ret.) of the USMC. Maj. Dominijanni created Fior with a focus on purity. Fior comes from the Gaelic “fior ghlan” which translates to “pure” and can mean “true and clean”. The whisky is blended by David Hallgarten, the Managing Director of the Glenaden Distillery, and unlike some other blended scotches, Fior has no color or flavor additives.

Blended Scotch comes from blending Single Malt Scotch and Single Grain Scotch. Single Malt Scotch comes from distilling only malted barley. Single Grain Scotch comes from distilling a mix of grains. These have traditionally been wheat and corn, but rye and other cereal grains have been used as well. Fior is a mix of scotch whiskies hailing from the Highlands and the Speyside and is blended from 40% malt and 60% grain.

The other focus of Fior is giving back to veterans. With each bottle purchased, Fior donates a portion of the sale to the Wounded Warrior Project. The Wounded Warrior Project was initially created in 2003 to help veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and has since grown to provide a multitude of services to veterans. The WWP says that it exists to “foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation’s history.”

Appearance: Warm hues of translucent burnt umber

Nose: Aromas of citrus rind, malt, and cocoa

Palate: Notes of orange zest, cocoa nib, cinnamon, and leather
