EnPhase Battery for Existing Solar

We have a 9yr old system 9.25kWh with 37 245w panels and 37 M215 Enphase micoinverters. We are looking to add an Enpower battery system (2 10kWh) mostly as a backup battery.

While the M215 is supported, is there a good reason to upgrade to IQ8’s ? During a grid outage we want the excess of solar panels to recharge the batteries during the day or a combination of the solar and battery meeting the demand.

I did find this in one article about the application, but can’t find a confirmation anywhere else on their site

If your batteries reach the Extremely Low State of Charge level (2% or below), then they will shut down to conserve energy and restart when a charging source is available.

If you have IQ8 Microinverters and an IQ System Controller 2, the batteries will start charging from excess solar production above and beyond what is used to power your home.

If you do not have IQ8 Microinverters, your system will restart as soon as the grid does. If the system cannot restart due to a prolonged grid outage, a certified installer can come out to help turn it back on.

Does anyone have experience adding batteries to an older system?
