How does an automatic transfer switch know when the grid is gone if the inverter is outputting power?

My question is geared more toward the commercial side of things, dealing with 480VAC. But I suppose the concept would be the same for residential.

How does the ATS know? Because if the grid goes down while the inverter(s) are outputting power, to my knowledge, there would still be voltage across the ATS (from the inverter).

How does it differentiate grid power from inverter power?
